Redefining the Family Portrait Experience // On Being Refined

It’s been a process y’all. But we are getting there. I promised I would share the journey, so here we are in all of it’s indecisive glory.

Indecisive because, while I have not “rebranded” my entire business, the entirety is being refined.

Authentic refinement adds nothing new.  You can’t add gold to make gold more pure. You can only refine it. To refine is to remove impurities and unwanted elements.

To make small changes.

To prune.

In this case, to properly portray what “Redefining the Family Portrait Experience” is all about.

So that the deeper meaning within can be purified and made new. It means removing elements that distract from delivering the message that is:

I believe that the Family Portrait experience should provide the space to intentionally pursue intimate moments within the family.

I believe that the photographs you will cherish for generations should not only reflect this experience, but also enable you to nourish these relationships.

I believe that chapter-by-chapter these moments will cultivate the bond of your family, telling the beautiful story of your life.

I have heard it a million different ways, but it wasn’t until I was co-teaching a Business & Branding session with Jordan Brittley where she said, “your niche comes from within” that it finally clicked in me.

I can’t suddenly decide chevron is my thing, and put it as a main element in my business’s visual identity. Or that the color pink will totally appeal to moms, i.e. families, and so I should make that a primary color in my marketing.

If my niche comes from within, so does the visual identity of my brand. So does everything. From the fonts and colors to the tufted ottoman and sandy floors. The words on paper, and the tangible heirloom keepsakes that I hope my grandchildren will someday hold. The very essence of why I do what I do. It is all a reflection of what matters most in my own life.

Slowly removing the visual elements that appealed to brides and weddings, and now highlighting the elements that are more family friendly should be a natural process.

I saw all of these wonderful branding boards on Pinterest and it seems so simple with everything laid out so neat and tidy. It looked as if decisions on what to use where wouldn’t be so complicated if it were all so organized and pretty. So I laid out my current branding board in photoshop in this new way – to see what can be refined easily. Because according to Pinterest, everything is super simple.

Yeah. Not really. lol

I mean – it looks neat and tidy, in PHOTOSHOP, but does that mean families will get my “message” any easier? I don’t know. Like I said, I’m still in the process. Refining. Sifting. Still making decisions. Still making small changes. Pruning.

Maybe this board will look different in another month from now.

Until next time friends…. stay tuned for more updates. Thanks for stopping by today.
